Overview

  • Typically, manufacturers of sealed gel batteries specify a float service life of 3-5 years, depending on the depth of discharge, over 1000 discharge and charge cycles can be expected. High temperatures are the real killer of batteries. When a system is designed for an internal battery, it is best to keep as much space as possible between the battery and heat sources such as transformers and power transistor heat sinks. While this is usually not practical or even possible, battery life will be maximized if it is kept within the operating temperature range of 20 to 25°C. This is sometimes easier to do in SPS, where the internal ambient temperature of the enclosure may be only 7 or 8°C warmer than the outside temperature, and only briefly when the inverter is put into service. On the other hand, the UPS runs continuously and measures must be taken to protect the battery from overheating. For example, placing the battery near the air intake rather than the exhaust will improve the situation because cooler room air will be pulled across the battery as it enters the electronics enclosure.

Temperature during battery charging is also an important consideration. As the temperature increases, the electrochemical activity within the battery increases. As the temperature decreases, the activity decreases. To ensure maximum battery life, it is best to use a temperature-compensated battery charger, which automatically reduces charging as the temperature rises and automatically increases charging as the temperature decreases. While this is an ideal way to manage battery charging voltages in different environments, few UPS product manufacturers actually employ any method for temperature-compensated charging of batteries. Generally, if the product is intended to be used in a protected environment, such as an office, the temperature within that space will remain fairly constant. Knowing the temperature rise inside the UPS electronics enclosure can often provide enough guidance to select the proper charging voltage.
